Description

A tranquil, green and pleasant oasis nestling on the west coast 20 miles south of the small town of Oban, Arduaine surprises and delights garden lovers all year round. Managed as much as possible by the friendly staff of the NTS as if it were still in private hands, the garden is a great favourite with visitors to Scotland’s west coast. The climate of this south-facing garden on the Sound of Jura is moderated by the warming effect of the North Atlantic Drift and allows many tender and beautiful plants to be grown here. The wide range of rhododendron species and hybrids, many known only from conservatories elsewhere, brings enthusiasts from far and wide; azaleas, magnolias and many other flowering shrubs fill the garden with scent and colour throughout the season. Blue Tibetan poppies, giant Himalayan lilies and Chatham Island forget-me-nots form just a small part of an extensive perennial collection flowering well into the autumn, set against the vibrant green background of trees, shrubs, ferns and mosses. From the tall trees of the woodland garden to the water lilies in the ponds, Arduaine takes the visitor on a horticultural journey through the temperate world.
