The Walled Garden At Scampston
Description
This inspired contemporary garden of 4½ acres was created by the internationally acclaimed designer and plantsman, Piet Oudolf and contains striking perennial meadow planting, as well as traditional spring and autumn borders, all of which are carefully labelled.
The garden is divided into a series of spaces, each with a character of its own. The long border walk under an avenue of lime trees contains many spring flowering shrubs with underplanting; included are Paeonia rockii, Tetrapanax papyrifer, Comptonia peregrina and Edgeworthia chrysantha.
The main focus of the central area is a perennial meadow using a rich palette of red, yellow, purple and orange. The planting here is Piet Oudolf’s signature style, and is designed to give a long season of interest.
Described in The Times as “a gem”, every aspect of this garden speaks of quality. “This is Oudolf at his inventive and confident best – an historic garden of the future” Good Gardens Guide 2007.
The garden is complemented by an excellent restaurant and a small plant sales area.
