In the Glorious Sunshine 10 Gardens Get Gold
At the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park

Ten gardens have been awarded much-coveted RHS Gold medals in the Show and Back to Back categories, amongst the glorious sunshine at this year’s RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park.

Two of the Gold medal-winning ‘mood’ gardens have also been given the ‘Best in Show’ accolades. Peter Ashley Ltd working with designer D C Duiker-Parker won in the Show garden category with ‘The Four Elements: A Garden for the Senses’, a geometrically structured outdoor room complete with sunken pool and seating area that unifies natural stone colours with vivid shimmering copper as the backdrop to a subtle and delicate planting scheme.

Best in the Back to Back category was Paperbark & Thorner Garden Design and Build’s ‘The Contemplative Garden’, which draws on inspiration from Spanish Moorish gardens to provide both a calming and reflective space. This garden was designed by Chris Zybrozyna, a first time designer at a major RHS show.

The Northwest Regional Development Agency was also able to celebrate Gold with its ‘A Healthy Future’ Show garden. To pave the way for the merger of Radclyffe Community Primary and St Clements Primary children from both schools have been working on plans for the new garden that they will share. Promoting healthy lifestyle and ‘five a day’ eating messages, the Show Garden at Tatton will be rebuilt within the grounds of the new school.
Other Gold-medal winning gardens include a ‘Meditation Garden’ from Deborah Oakley, another Tatton debutant. Deborah has designed the garden around a Buddha statue, which sits amidst orange and maroon planting, to conjure up images of Buddhist robes, and a selection of trees and evergreens help provide textural height and interest.

22-year old Phillippa Probert returned to Tatton after winning a Bronze medal last year, and celebrates Gold medal triumph in 2006 with her bright and breezy ‘Crimson Crush’ space, a romantic and passionate garden that incorporates rich colours and even a secret dining area.

Designers Lucy Hunter and Louise Ward teamed up this year to create the tropical Gold-winning ‘Out of Africa’ garden, based on the colonial Kenyan landscape and inspired by the book and film of the same name, using English planting in striking coppers, creams and deep reds to surround a gazebo on stilts.

Show manager Kris Hulewicz comments, “The number of Gold medals won this year is reflective of exceptional levels of creativity and outstanding horticultural knowledge demonstrated by the designers. It is also thrilling to see a number of designers achieving Gold medal standard at their RHS début, and the way in which the show has reached out this year to work with schools and community groups.”
