Description

Prior Park Landscape Garden

Beautiful and intimate 18th-century landscape garden

Created by local entrepreneur and philanthropist Ralph Allen, with advice from both the pioneer of landscape gardens the poet Alexander Pope and ‘Capability’ Brown, the garden is set in a sweeping valley with magnificent views of the city of Bath. The many interesting features include a Palladian bridge and three lakes. The Wilderness Project, part-funded by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, is the final phase of the restoration of this sustainably managed garden, reinstating the Serpentine Lake, Gothic Temple, Grass Cabinet and Mrs Allen’s Grotto. A 5-minute walk from the garden leads on to the Bath Skyline, a 6-mile circular walk around the city which encompasses woodlands, meadows, an Iron Age hill-fort, Roman settlements, 18th-century follies and spectacular views
