THE SCULPTURE OF HELAINE BLUMENFELD
From her first major show in 1966, Helaine Blumenfeld captured the attention and respect of international critics and collectors alike. Her sculpture has been exhibited both solo and with renowned sculptors like Henry Moore and Brancusi. One of the boldest and most diverse artists working today, she has continually experimented with form producing an extensive body of work which combines a respect for tradition and sculptural values with the breathtaking vitality of the twentieth century. Across a variety of materials and scales, Blumenfeld’s sculpture fuses mind and body in a sensual and increasingly sophisticated expression of emotions and ideas. Her pioneering approach and the unrivalled communicative power of her work has not only placed her at the forefront of contemporary sculpture, but has extended the very possibilities of art.

BIOGRAPHY
Helaine Blumenfeld studied sculpture with Ossip Zadkine in Paris after obtaining a doctorate in Philosophy from Columbia University. She came to England in 1969 and since then has spent her time between her Cambridge studio and her studios in Pietrasanta, Italy.
She has exhibited widely, at Kettle Yard in 1973, the Grand Palais in 1978, the Sainsbury Centre in 1981 in New York at the Alex Rosenberg Gallery with Henry Moore in 1985, at Whitefriars in Coventry in 1986, at Wimpole Hall The National Trust in 2001, at the Royal British Society of Sculptures in 2003 and with the Robert Bowman Gallery in London 2005.
She has executed over fifty large scale commissioned sculptures in Bronze, Marble, Granite and Steel for:

• Lincoln Centre, Storm King, New York
• Beaumont Theatre, Coventry
• Leicester University
• British Petroleum,
• City Bank
• Clare Hall, Cambridge University, Cambridge

All of her work has been concerned with engaging the public in an awareness of the beauty and spirituality that surrounds us and in exploring the relationship that can exist between sculpture and environment.
She has spoken about Creativity to the Cambridge Visual Arts Society, The Institute of Contemporary Art, The Pietrasanta Symposium and to The British Psychoanalytic Society.
She has been very active in organising exhibitions of Sculpture in the Environment and introduced the first Sculpture in the Garden Show at Leicester University in 2002.
In 2003 Helaine received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from Leicester University.
In 2004 Helaine was elected Vice President of The Royal British Society of Sculptors.
