While revolutions like online auctions, a bespectacled wizard and pickled sharks in formaldehyde were hitting the headlines 10 years ago, deep in the heart of Battersea there was another revolution quietly brewing that would see British consumers spending over £55 million on art they loved and could afford.

It’s been 10 years since the very first Affordable Art Fair – the brainchild of gallery owner Will Ramsay – set up shop under a huge canopy in Battersea Park, and just like Harry Potter et al, the seemingly revolutionary concept has proved a sure-fire hit. It’s a simple idea: take the ‘stuffiness’ out of the art world, specify a price range of £50 to £3,000 and bring together quality artwork in a range of mediums, and you will have hundreds of thousands of people beating down your door.

In fact, the Affordable Art Fair’s formula is so successful it’s become a global brand, with fairs now held in New York, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels and Bristol as well as affiliate fairs in Sydney and Melbourne.

In tune with the public’s growing knowledge of, and love affair with art, the past decade has seen the fairs, with their relaxed and colourful atmosphere, increasingly attract a broad range of galleries – from the edgy, young and emerging to the well-established – thus providing the opportunity for visitors to enjoy work by rising stars along with well-known names like Gerald Laing, Ken Howard, Bridget Riley and Howard Hodgkin among others.
