Alongside our Designer Gardens, we have permanent feature gardens and walkways designed by the visionary landscape designer Ivan Hicks, that all form part of the Butterfly World Project.
Through the Flowerpot Garden – Look at the garden through the eyes of an insect. Enter through a giant flowerpot and discover a world where everything around you is enormous! From giant plant pots, a gigantic garden fork and a huge packet of seeds. A real eye-opener for all the family.
Tropical Butterfly House
A taster of what is to come over the coming years when the tropical dome is open, we have an 85ft long tropical butterfly house filled with beautiful tropical butterflies and plants. Walk through the humid environment and witness the full lifecycle of a butterfly, from eggs to caterpillar, to pupae and finally to butterfly.
If you’re looking for ways to attract moths and butterflies back to your garden, don’t hesitate to visit this fantastic garden. Step inside a world dedicated to butterflies and their habitat, with a sun trap, nettle patch and even a pond to entice wildlife.
Feast your eyes on a wealth of edible treats in our Very Hungry Caterpillar Edible Garden. In honour of Eric Carle’s world-famous childrens book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, we have created a suitably scrumptious garden to show you how to grow yummy pesticide-free vegetable and plants. Definately one for all the family!
A respected scientist, gardener and conservationist, Dame Miriam Rothschild was a scientific advisor to the Butterfly World Project, and died in 2005, aged 96. In memory of her, we have designed this stunning nectar garden surrounded by wildflowers and filled with nectar filled plants and flowers.
Antennae Walkways
Shaped like the antennae (or feelers) of a butterfly, the Antennae Walkways are risen beds of chalk that look out over Future Gardens and lead to wildflower meadows. Sown with nectar-rich annuals, the raised banks aim to attract basking butterflies in the sun.
When seen from the air, the spiral path looks like the curled up mouthparts of a butterfly or moth, called a proboscis. Spiral round the walkway and take in the stunning flowers surrounding it.
Due to open over the coming years, the tropical dome will be filled with 10,000 butterflies, birds and Maya sculptures. It will be the biggest walk-through butterfly experience in the world. Until that time, we have created a very special garden in the space that will become the dome. The Ring is an enormous 100m in diameter and has a chalk butterfly in the very centre, surrounded by sunflowers that will attract butterflies and moths back to the area. It really is something to look at, and we hope it will give you a small taste of what will become Butterfly World.
