Hall place and Gardens
Hall Place is a fine Grade I listed country house built in 1537 for Sir John Champneys a wealthy merchant and former Lord Mayor of London. The house has been at the heart of the local community since the Tudor period and remains one of the historic treasures of Bexley. Admission is free and the house is now re-opened after an extensive restoration project which started in 2007.
Gardens Award Winning Gardens
Hall Place is surrounded by 65 hectares of magnificent formal gardens and landscaped parkland that have something to offer visitors throughout the year.
The Hall Place gardens are one of only a handful of sites in the UK to have won the Civic Trust’s Green Flag award for eleven successive years and also have coveted Green Heritage Site status.
There are many features around the spectacular gardens. The west lawn boasts a stunning topiary lawn of chess pieces and the Queen’s Beasts, planted to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. You can stroll around enclosed gardens, rose and herb gardens and admire inspirational herbaceous borders full of colour throughout the year. The parkland, through which the River Cray flows, can be explored at a leisurely pace whilst discovering the exceptional collection of trees and the profusion of wildlife that call the estate home.
The former walled gardens have a plant nursery with display gardens, model gardens and a sub-tropical plant house with a host of exotic plants, where you can see bananas ripening in mid-winter. The nursery shop offers visitors the chance to purchase a variety of shrubs, perennial and annual plants grown in the Hall Place gardens and to get some advice from our experienced team.
The new visitor centre in the grounds offers a riverside tearoom with unparalleled views of the parkland and a gift shop, as well as tourist information.
Admission to the gardens is free, except on special events days when there may be a charge.
