Description

Hercules Garden and Blair Castle
Hercules Garden is a walled garden of ten acres, over looked by a fine statue of Hercules by John Cheere, placed on a rise in a shrub walk running east from Blair Castle, the ancestral home of the Dukes of Atholl. It was the 2nd Duke who landscaped the grounds in the mid 18th century, his scheme evolved to create two ponds in a large walled garden designed in the ‘Ferme Ornee’ manner-fruit and vegetables grown among ornamental planting schemes and sweet smelling shrubs.
Today the garden contains a large collection of fruit trees, a terrace over 300 meters long flanked by herbaceous borders, a variety of beds for vegetables, herbs, cut flowers, shade loving plants, roses and annuals. The layout is based on the 2nd Duke’s design and includes some of the original, heather thatched huts for the nesting birds and a restored folly, housing a display about the restoration of the garden.
