Description

Whether you’re a keen gardener, an avid antiques collector or happy just to soak up some history, Culzean is a great place to spend the day. The castle was converted by the architect Robert Adam as a bachelor residence for the Earl of Cassillis, between 1777 and 1792. Gazing across the Clyde from the Circular Saloon, he must have been very pleased with the result. Our guides can tell you all about the best features of the house including Adam’s masterpiece, the Oval Staircase, as well as the fine collection of paintings and furniture.

If you’re hungry for military history, don’t miss the Armoury with its impressive display of flintlock pistols and swords. There’s also a strong link with General Eisenhower, as the topfloor apartment was presented to him for his lifetime in 1945 in recognition of his role during World War II. Nowadays, you can stay in the apartment as a paying guest.

Out around the country park, miles of waymarked paths lead you on a voyage of discovery through majestic woodland. Head for the Deer Park or the Cliff Walk, or seek out the estate’s hidden treasures like Adam’s ruined arch, the ‘Roman’ viaduct, the Camellia House or the pagoda. Gardeners can take inspiration from the Fountain Court, the walled garden and the Victorian vinery.

The Swan Pond is the perfect spot for a family picnic. There’s an adventure playground, and we have our own beaches too! Before you head home, visit the Home Farm area to pick up a few plants or treats from the Food Hall, and enjoy some delicious Scottish cooking at the coffee shop and restaurant.

Call for information about our programme of special events – everything from nature walks, to Living History events and al fresco plays.
