An important example of a medium-sized brick-built Elizabethan manor house, the building is architecturally distinguished and well preserved, with notable early 17th-century wall paintings. Daniel Defoe described the manor in A Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain as ‘where tradition says the Gunpowder Treason Plot was first contrived’. ‘Bee boles’ can be seen in the walled garden.
