As a sculptor I enjoy being as versatile as possible, using a variety of materials including stainless steel, bronze and bronze resin, and in doing so I have not limited myself to one particular genre. There is, however, one common element that flows within my work… Curves.
During travels to Zimbabwe, India and Nepal, unusually curved trees or the elegant movement of a sari are the type of subjects that have most often caught my imagination. It is these beautifully organic curves and forms that dominate my work. From the curve in a horse’s neck as something catches his eye across the field, to 8ft drawings of Nepali ladies walking, or 7ft tall stainless steel herons, I create elegance and movement through use of these curves.
Skill and technical knowledge are extremely important to me. Both GCSE and A- level sculpture gave me a brilliant start as I had a very inspiring teacher. I went on to study Fine Art sculpture at Central St Martins and City and Guilds of London Art school which gave me the ability to approach contemporary sculpture in a conceptual nature. However, I was frustrated by the lack of technical training that modern art colleges provide. This led me to finding my own training in metal work in an engineering workshop, where I learnt the art of welding and sheet metal fabrication. I have also spent many hours teaching myself the basics of mold making and casting in pewter and bronze resin and spent 3 months working for Andy Sinclair at Ridgeway Sculpture design.
Past commissions have varied enormously, from a traditionally sculpted bust of a spaniel, to a more unusual, but beautiful, 30ft tall stainless steel mesh spiderweb installation. Whether clients approach me with or without a specific idea of what they want, I enjoy working with them to create a unique piece of sculpture.
